This past weekend, while at a cookout, I had the opportunity to tell people what I do. Upon telling one lady that I am a personal trainer, she exclaimed, "Do you yell at your clients just like Jillian Michaels?" My answer, "Absolutely not!" Seriously, this is the stereotype that many trainers are now facing. One over-the-top trainer on tv does not represent all trainers!
I believe exercise should be fun. You should look forward to working with your personal trainer. Would you want to work out when someone is screaming at you? I wouldn't. And, believe it or not, it is possible to get a great workout without being belittled. Most trainers can make you sore with a smile on their face.
Personal trainers have different personalities which suit specific clients. You have to hire the trainer that you feel most comfortable with. If you are former military, you might appreciate the "drill sergeant" type of trainer. However, if you have a nagging injury and need someone who will work with you, then you need to find an empathetic trainer.
If you're searching for a trainer, look beyond the search engines. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has a trainer locator as does the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM.) Plus there is a relatively new website called SmashFit that matches trainers and clients. Find the one who's right for you!
